Hard working, practical and tenacious. The never-give-in spirit of the Mack brand was instilled from its beginning, in a dusty Brooklyn garage at the start of the twentieth century. Standing before Jack Mack and his brothers on that day in 1900 was a milestone in transportation: the first bus ever built on the American continent.

Over the next twenty years the 18-passenger, 24-horsepower bus carried thousands of sightseers through Brooklyn’s scenic Prospect Park. By the time it clocked up a remarkable one million miles, the bus had laid the foundation of Mack’s reputation for durability and longevity.

In 1915, the first Mack AC rolled out of the factory. During World War One, thousands of the resilient ACs went behind enemy lines, transporting men and materials through the axle-deep mud of the French battlefields. Other trucks bogged down, but the AC was unstoppable. Mightily impressed, British soldiers dubbed it the ‘Bulldog’ after its snub-nosed hood, ferocious stamina and gritty persistence. The nickname stuck and a legend was born.

Mack passed its next milestone in 1932 when Alfred Fellows Masury, the company’s chief engineer, had time on his hands recuperating after an operation. He occupied himself by carving his version of the Mack bulldog. His astute marketing sense created a brand icon which first appeared on steel plates fixed to the side of each truck, before taking pride of place as the famed bonnet ornament we know today.

The timing couldn’t have been better. As a massive U.S. building boom kicked off, the mighty Mack Bulldog was hard at work. For years the muscle bound canine was seen moving countless tonnes of earth on massive projects such as the Lincoln Tunnel and the Hoover Dam – one of the industrial wonders of the world.

Australia first laid eyes on the Mack truck in 1919 – and since 1963 we’ve got fair dinkum, designing and building our own steel workhorses at Mack Trucks Australia’s Queensland-based plant. Tough. Relentless. Long-lasting. Every Mack truck is a steel-clad monument to reliability, durability and application excellence – purpose-bred to work Australia-wide.
